I would like to have the option to retire from a race alltogether if the car gets damaged (starts smoking) before a number of laps has been completed. Example:
You start a 60 lap race. After, say 15 laps the car starts smoking. At lap 45, after dropping down to last position the car brakes completely, giving you the final position 3:rd from the bottom or so (thanks to the other two broken cars already out of the race). You will not get much money, but you WILL get 30 laps of car wear, most likely costing alot more than the race income.
Just that happened to me in the first race. Third position, car breaks, stays on the track a long time until it eventuelly ends up in the bottom. A couple of millins income, the wear cost on the car was probably about five times that. A VERY expensive race with absolutely nothing to show for it in the end.
This is what I would like: The possibility to retire if the car starts smoking before lap number **. Lets say I choose lap number 30 in a 60 lap race, and the car breaks before lap 30, the car rolls out to the pits and stops there. No more pointless wear, no blocking faster cars when you drop through the field. Even if the car would hold together to the end of the race it would have been at the bottom of the field, so no big change in race position/income.
If the car breaks in lap 50 for example, it would be very likely to make it to the finish with a still pretty good position.
What do you think?

Its a bit unfair for the people on the otherside of the world who arent awake, and thats not the only flaw.

We already tried to implement it some seasons ago, but its not that easy with the current script. It is still on our ToDo-List, but coz of the complexity with low priority.

At least half of elite would retire every race if this would be implemented :)

I don't think you will pass that rule if you have been smoking for half the race anyway. I sure haven't!

but car should not smoke for too long, it needs to be dealt with.

Totally agree to this one, just make it like the "dont pit for technical problem when XX laps from finish" option

It's not a retire when you feel like it choice, it's for after your car is already smoking.

Hmm, I think i don't like it.
And i tell you why.
The reason we have implemented the 90% rule is to discourage ppl running a worn car and still earn alot of money and save up. Instead we like to encourage ppl to race every race.
If you still happen to like to run a worn car you should expect to drop out (most of the times) and earn only 50%. This is part of the game, trying to know if your car can last the whole race distance and taking a risk or not.
If you would implement what Ulf suggested, you would take out alot of that risk, since dropping out would not hurt that much anymore saving valuable wear on carparts.
For ppl running many parts on 99% wear it does not make a difference, they usualy drop out anyway, though sometimes not.
It would mainly benefit ppl runnign with a fewparts at risk of reaching 99% during the race, which IMO is part of the game.
If they fear parts wear, let them gamble on a aerly dropout in some other way.

Maybe there should be something also to do with very slow lap times a smoking car is doing. In real F1 if a car is doing 5 seconds less a lap and is deemed unsafe to other drivers due to for example being slow on the straights he would be forced to retire anyway. (perhaps this is something completely different though :) )
On the downside imagine if ur 3 laps from the finish in 2nd place and your car starts smoking and u retire and lose say 8 or 9 places. Thats why it definitely needs to be an option for people to choose before the race.

I am in the lower divisions, and it is feasable to come out of a basd situation, just need to take a season to do it.

Rather than having a new option allowing you to choose when to retire your car, why not have an automatic rule written into the game like this...
If you car has a technical problem that cant be repaired AND your car finds itself in a position below P10 (or whatever position the admin feel is fair), the car will automatically be pitted and retired.
This way, your car will be retired only when its chances of scoring are over but it wont destroy your race if you have a technical problem late in whilst amongst the points.
