am wondering is there an initial need to join a team. being new to the game i was just wondering

Ralph, you don't have to join a team. You can join one though and learn from your teammates.
There's also the mentoring program.

I can tell you that there is a 'Joining a team guide' in development, just undergoing some final edits and hopefully out in the next week :)
