The spaceship’s cabin lurches as, with a sound like the Universe ending played backwards on a 1963 Wurlitzer, followed by a slightly surprised “ping”, the Heart of Gold leaves hyperspace and returns to normal space.

Looking around you, you instantly sense that something is wrong by the expression on Arthur Dent’s face. Or, to be more exact, his faces. Because everyone in the room looks like Arthur Dent.

“It must be Thursday,” says one of the Arthurs. “I never could get the hang of Thursdays.”

The insanely cheerful voice of Eddie the Ship’s computer comes from a console in the center of the room. “Guys, I’m pleased as punch to inform you that it seems the Vogons have disrupted the Improbability Drive, and it will not fully disengage. Residual levels of improbability, 30214:1. Have a super great day.” At that the computer is silent.

You remember back to before the Improbability Drive engaged and turned things haywire, how the Vogons had been chasing you, determined to throw you into the void of space and finish their task of demolishing Earth.

When frantic attempts fail to get the computer paying any futher attention, you realize that you’re going to have to sort this out yourself by finding out which of the Arthur Dents are actually Vogons, and getting rid of them.

DON’T PANIC.

Rules:

Mafia basics:
http://mafiascum.net/wiki/index.php?title=Newbie_guide

Recruitment Rules:
1. Every player is obliged to read the rules posted here and follow them.
2. Mafia is a game that requires a fair amount of time and commitment. Do not join if you are not prepared to sign in and contribute regularly to the game, over a reasonable period of time.
3. You can only join this game by sending me a PM containing a confirmation that you read the rules and that you agree to follow them. No exceptions.
4. New Mafia players are welcome, just add a line to your application PM to show that you understand the game and will be able to play it. If this is difficult or daunting, perhaps you are not ready for mafia yet.
5. I reserve the right to reject a player if I decide that his/her presence in the game could greatly lower the game experience for other players, or if his/her presence could endanger my sanity.

General Gameplay Rules:
1. Votes need to be placed in a separate line and bolded.
2. Votes that are not in separate line and/or not bolded, will not be counted.
3. Change of vote needs to be preceded by unvoting.
4. Dead players cannot talk at all. Zombie posts are forbidden. Once you died you have to wait for the end of the game to say anything.
5. There will be no twilight in this game.
6. You are not allowed to edit your post in any situation.
7. The rules of the GPRO forum apply with regard to swearing. Soft insults are permitted and in the context of the game acceptable.
8. Replacement of inactives by dead players will not happen.
9. Self voting is stupid. But allowed.
10. Voting for “no lynch” is allowed.
11. Unless specified in your role PM, no communication about the game with other players is allowed outside of this thread.
12. Using out-of-game site mechanics to make in-game arguments is not allowable and may result in punishment or modkills. You may say “X hasn’t been online all day so maybe we should wait for him to post before we hammer him,” or “Y is online, please respond.” You may not say “X and Y have been sending PM’s just after the lynch and so are scum.” You get the point. If you don’t get the point, just don’t do anything even remotely of the sort.
13. If I see that you are trying to “break” the game, or play against the spirit of the game, you and every other player that represents the same alignment as you will be punished.
14. While the game is based mostly on a fairly standard mafia setup and roles, some twisting and unusual roles may be included.
15. There will be two types of deadline given in this game – Soft Deadlines and Hard Deadlines.
a. Soft Deadlines:
i. All players will be required to have a vote in place at the Soft Deadline.
ii. If there are players with no vote in place at the Soft Deadline, there is a 50% chance that they will be lynched. If multiple players, the chance of one being lynched is still 50%, and the lynchee will be one randomly selected from the non voters.
iii. If “No lynch” is leading the votes, or if the vote is tied, and if no “non-voters” are lynched, there will be no lynch, votes will be reset, and the day will continue.
iv. If there is a clear vote leader, or if a player with no vote placed is lynched, the lynch will proceed as normal and the game will move to a night phase, as normal.
b. Hard Deadlines:
i. All players will be required to have a vote in place at the Hard Deadline.
ii. Players with no vote in place at the Hard Deadline will be modkilled.
iii. If there is a tie, the lynch will be randomly decided between all players in the tie, as well as the player whose vote or unvote created the tie.
iv. If "no lynch" leads the vote, there will be no lynch (dur) and the game will move to night phase as normal.

Additional Game Info:
1) The game theme is mostly just for flavour – no knowledge of the books, radio series or movie plot or characters is required to play. The plot has been twisted and timelines from the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” have been ignored.
2) Many people were killed by the Vogons in the mad chase to the Heart of Gold. In the chaos, you are not aware of who these characters are, but the Vogons will be aware of their names, which they could use as safe fake claims. Some of these may be major characters from the books. All of these may be major characters from the books. None of these may be major characters from the books. There is no way to tell a player’s alignment from their character claim.
3) Roles have been assigned to characters fairly haphazardly; while some logic and storyline may apply in some cases, in others it may not. Major characters from the series may be vanilla, minor characters may be power roles. There is no way to tell a player’s role from his character claim.
4) Roles have been assigned to players randomly.
5) Space ships are dangerous places to wander about alone, and anyone not in regular contact with the group is likely to fall out of an airlock. MOD definition of regular contact is having a vote placed at any deadline, and having made at least one content post every 48 hours. Weekends do not count.
6) I will try keep days short, nights shorter, and the pace of the game high, as I believe this makes for a better game. If you have a night action, please give me default orders before the night comes so you are not caught out – these can always be changed (once) when the night does come. If no default orders are in place and no pm received by night action deadline, night actions will be randomly assigned.
7) Town role PMs take the format: “you are <name>, <brief description largely plagiarized through google>, <role description>, <win condition>.”
8) Win condition for town: “You win with town when all threats have been found and dispatched.”

More basic mafia information can be found here: http://mikeburnfire.sitesled.com/mscumB.swf

First, the good news and the bad news, in no particular order:
Mikko Salminen and Riley Morrell join the player list.

Role PM's will be sent out over the course of the next few beers, game will start when I say so.

Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun.

Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-two million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think online mafia games are a pretty neat idea...

So, a room full of Arthurs, with some bad, some good, hidden behind that gormless face and scruffy dressing gown.

Where to begin?

Begin here.
