So I'm watching the race live and my car goes from 15th to 10th during the opening lap and then proceeds to drive in to the pits for service. I started with plenty of fuel and there was no smoke coming from the car to indicate a mechanical issue.

This is only my third race and I can't find anything about it on the forums.

Can anyone explain this?

From the race commentary in the old race viewer:

"Goggles Pizano is enraged after being pushed off track by Jose Montilla Belandria and enters the pits with a slightly damaged underbody"

maybe a wing change, it will tell you in the race commentary on the old race screen or at the end of race in the " race analysis"

The graphical presentation of the pit stop (mainly the tyre blankets, or lack thereof in this case) is a bit weird though. Pitting for a non-wing tech problem should have the front tyres covered in tyre blankets, going by this legend: /gb/Legend.asp

Yes in the old race screen you get the commentary but only as a supporter of the game 8-)

No 5th Gear? in the first round my car goes up to 250,starting with the second lap itonly goes to 4th gear and top speed 216 then 208 then 216, no accident, got no chance to close up with the other cars. Any idea? Le Mans is a fast speed circuit.

I'm just watching the replay of the opening lap and the car that they claimed pushed me off the track was never even close to my car during any part of that lap. Is this just a random part of the game?

I would need to see how the opening lap is simulated in the race engine to replicate it better. At the moment there is random variation in your speed in the new viewer to make it look more exciting, but that's not what happens in race engine.

Car speed is determined by parts level, setup of the car and driver.

It's mostly decided by lap time and what values I have put for the track file. In this case there was an old file, which meant that the speed was strange. It's now fixed.

At this moment the viewer (either of them) isn't capable of showing events so precisely

No

The selections made by managers can have an effect on it.

It's usually (always?) a tyre blister on the first lap regardless what the commentators guess it is, so the pit is just a normal one for tyres not a tech problem.

But still, it's not like level 1 parts will be as fast as level 15, dos it ? xD
