GBT Season 1 March

Buenos Aires Grand - Quarterfinals

Tom Byrne {1} def. Kyle Morris 3-2 on tiebreaker (5-6, 5-0, 0-0, 5-4, 0-5, coinflip)
Greg Tierney def. Dániel Vankó on walkover
Vin Struder def. Lyee Chong 3-2 in replay (5-2, 2-3, 4-2, 5-3, 0-6)
Chew Kai Wen def. Quentin Rieg 1-0 (6-5, 1-1, 4-4, 4-4, 1-1)

https://i.imgur.com/njS6TkF.png

Four more matches decided the Final Four and they had everything! First, an old fashioned tiebreaker between Tom Byrne and Kyle Morris. Byrne had already played two of them, while this was Morris' second tiebreaker. Ultimately, it was the #1 seed getting the better of Morris. Greg Tierney will be his opponent, after Dániel Vankó failed to show up in time. Mismanagement, injury? In about 31 matches, this is a first and having a 97% show-up rate among players is still amazingly good.

It went down to the wire in possibly the toughest Quarterfinal. It took one replay and almost a tiebreaker to decide the winner but Vin Struder showed no mercy as the third seed passed through Lyee Chong. Later statistics to follow, but Struder's first five clay matches went 4 and 1 (discounting replays therefore ties), an impressive start. He will play Chew Kai Wen in the second Semi-Final after certainly the most bizarre match so far: after Kai Wen won the first set, all he did was to copy Quentin Rieg's moves, tying the following four sets and winning the match 1-0 for the first time in clay tournament history.

Deadline is Friday 22:00 for the players of the following matches:

Buenos Aires Grand - Semi-Finals
Tom Byrne {1} v Greg Tierney
Vin Struder {3} v Chew Kai Wen

Deadline is Saturday 22:00 for the Buenos Aires Grand Final.

• Just a reminder that the time window for the Semi-Finals and the Final is only 24 hours. If you win your Quarterfinal match, you will be expected to play again in less than one day.

The Tiebreaker officiallly changes, starting Monday (beginning of April)

1. For Season 1 you get 15 Tiebreak Points.
2. You send your first submission (be it clay, grass or hard) like normal. You always get notified if your first submission ends up tying your opponent.
3. In the [Tie] PM I will ask you to send a second, unique submission and your Tiebreak number.
4. Whoever sends a higher number, wins the tiebreak. If the two numbers are tied too, a coinflip will decide the match.
5. Both players have the points deducted from the original total. Tiebreak Points only reset to 20 after every season. Tiebreak Points will not be visible either in the spreadsheet or in the match report (all tiebreaks are won 7-6 by someone). You can always ask for how many points you have left.

The rule comes into force on Monday 0:01.

+ Rules are being modified accordingly
+ Rule from hard-court matches (indicating PM speed and other things as tiebreak deciding factors) are being deleted.
+ On all surfaces, the new trend is: Submission -> Another unique submission -> Tiebreak Points

Oh maybe that was the original question too? My bad!

Some of you send the two submissions at once, knowing the first one is used automatically and the second one is only used for the tie. Similarly, the Tiebreaker number is only used when it's actually needed, after two tied matches. When you send a Tiebreaker number along with your second submission, but the second round decides the winner (no tiebreak needed), you don't get back your points because you didn't lose them in the first place.

GBT Season 1 March

Buenos Aires Grand - Semi-Finals

Greg Tierney def. Tom Byrne {1} 2-1 (1-1, 2-0, 6-5, 4-4, 2-5)
Chew Kai Wen def. Vin Struder {3} 3-2 on replay (4-1, 1-0, 6-5, 4-5, 1-5)

https://i.imgur.com/mKNgVRr.png
https://i.imgur.com/1KvukvJ.png

These four players all won two matches each so nothing can be considered as a huge shock anymore. But out of the four possibilities, this final might be the least expected. Tom Byrne loses a clay match for the first time in his career, mainly because a heroic third set which has been won by Greg Tierney. For a while, there was a possibility of an all-US final but the third seed fell on replay, again because of a tight third set when Chew Kai Wen got the better of Vin Struder. Both finalists of the Fortaleza 500 found their way out in the Semi-Finals.

Who will be the winner of the first ever Grand and the new Number One? Find out in 24 hours!

Deadline is Saturday 22:00 for the players of the following matches:

GBT Season 1 March

Buenos Aires Grand - Final

Chew Kai Wen def. Greg Tierney 3-2 (1-2, 6-2, 1-7, 4-2, 4-2)

https://i.imgur.com/Lp1Vryu.png

You don't wish this to your enemies! Greg Tierney felt like a Grand winner for two whole hours until it became apparent the fifth, initially meaningless set was following a 2-2 set tie. Chew Kai Wen had actually four points left. That is indeed more than Tierney's two points, meaning it's actually Chew Kai Wen who is the winner of the first Grand tournament of GBT!

https://i.imgur.com/Rhq9N7u.png

The victory means Chew Kai Wen is the new World Number One, ahead of Tom Byrne and Greg Tierney. Matija Gjurčević's first entry is a tournament win, winning the Lima 100 without opposition. Ahead of the grass-court season, Mike Baston, Rocco Stallone and Grand Crouch look more skilled than the others, but there is another month until the second Grand of the year. Who will prepare for the Rome Grand by training/resting/more playing? Stay tuned!

Greg I am very deeply sorry. This is the one thing I always try to avoid the hardest: false hope / false good feelings, taken away by host's mistake.

No worries! I figured it was strange when I looked and saw that there was no way I could have lost, but I had sent something that should've been 60%/40% in my favor (Chew managed to hit the 40%, though).

Congrats Chew!
