Quick interview with head of the F1R FIA Jon Beagles:
Q - Jon, thanks for your time today - how are you?
A - Fine thanks, bit pushed for time but keen to address some of the issues surrounding the series.
[So here's what's going on folks...]
Q - Understood - we'll keep this snappy. So what has been happening with F1R 1954?
A - Well, we had a supplier for the series lined up - however it turns out their technology is rather antiquated and thus they will not be able to catch up to modern demands.
[Andy has been trying to work out how to program the website and has come to the conclusion he simply can't do it justice, and so has said he wont be able to do it]
Q - That sounds serious, is there any way around this for the supplier?
A - Sadly not, focus in other areas that demand their attention - including success in other categories - means they simply cannot devote their time to F1R.
[Given that Andy has a new job he wont have time to catch up with newer programming techniques as he had hoped to, but he has been really honest with me all along the way - so no hard feelings there]
Q - So, where does this leave F1R? Will this be the end of the series?
A - Well, I wont pretend we're not in a tough position - but it's definitely not the end. We can always go back to the old supplier, and it's certainly possible to find a new one also...depends who out there could be interested.
[F1 1954 will take place. As I've said before I'll run it in the old way if I need to in a couple of months time - though as the preference is for the website I'll be looking at who wants to actually set it up. I'll need to find a volunteer though - which is the tough bit!]
Q - Give us some timescales then Jon, when can we expect to see F1R 1954 take place?
A - That depends - but certainly in the next few months.
[I will run the series in the old-style in February if I've not found any way before hand to do it, otherwise it'll start as soon as I can get someone to set up the website!]

While we lot like to have a website to put our numbers in, it probably wouldn't hurt if '54 was done the old way.
Still, depends on if there is someone that has the skills. Not forcing the issue though.

I wonder about a Google Doc based version of the game - the tricky thing is that I would need to see how many attempts people have had on it. And I don't know if there is a way of me working that out.
Unless maybe I only gave access to said doc for a period of 10 minutes...maybe that could work and you would have to try as many setups as you could in that time...
Hmmm, that idea maybe has some merit.

THIS CAN WORK!!! :D
All you need to have is someone on the doc at the same time as you to make sure you aren't trying multiple combinations of efforts. It means that I'll have to be quite strict on how you input data...but that's not too difficult to change around. Also I can lock certain things down I think, so that you can only change certain squares.
One question - how easy is it to get around Google Docs Protections? If anyone managed it then all the formulae would be clear to see :|

I guess that's the million-dollar question.
I have no idea if you can get around those protections. Maybe you can provide some bogus formulas and let us see if we can get past the protection?

That works for me. :) Don't feel any particular need to find out the formulas anyway. I prefer to be surprised. :)

1 issue with this way is that it is not possible to do it on your own...well, it is, but it would be too open to cheating. So I either need:
a) to organise times with everyone individually when they can run their qualis - these should be very quick to do now as you can see times instantly. But you'll need me online to add up the amounts and verify you've not cheated the system.
b) for people to verify each others times - good thing is that this will allow you to do things without me. But then we have to trust that everyone can fill in the sheet correctly.
c) if there is a formula on google docs that will take a value into a new cell when a link is clicked/a value is inputted then this would solve the whole issue. I do not think this exists though :|

Could be potentially problematic, if someone cannot find a suitable time for you. I mean ... they could say '01:00 CET'. We don't want you to stay up all night for us. :)

Well I'm naturally up until about 03:00 CET most weekdays, with time from 20:00 CET most of those to do so. And Saturday I can be available for quite a bit of the day too. I really am only envisaging qualifying taking 5-10 minutes to complete per person...depends on how quick you guys are.
What do you reckon to the 'buddy system' idea? I think it has merit - and could really open up the game.

I guess team cooperation might suffer a bit with this approach, unless someone does one single lap then sends the feedback to the team and allows a teammate to do a lap next. Although that might stretch time quite a bit ...
I guess we'd pretty much have to do the entire qualifying in one go?

Wow. Simply wow.
My MUM just came in and solved the whole thing!!! :P
Have a separate sheet on Google Docs, which is the viewing gallery in effect. The 2nd person will see what lap time has been done when the other person pushes 'SUBMIT LAP' and can then input this into the other sheet.
This means that it doesn't matter how much the drivers tinkers around they wont know what their lap time is doing until the other person with pre-agreed permissions comes online to allow them to do their laps. I'll have to be pretty hot on giving the right access to the right people - but this means the buddy system is definitely the way forward...opens this up to other timezones really nicely as two people can be buddies for each other, as long as they are not driver & mechanic or in the same team.

Yeah - you would basically work in pairs across teams to adjudicate/validate each others lap efforts, meaning you could take as long as you wanted - but there would only be a certain amount of laps you could run still.

Everyone else
To my mind this is realistic as the top guys will get the spots in the teams they want, whilst the others will look to get spots in other teams depending on their performance/compatibility.
