History of the Track
Started construction in 2002, with the interest of the domestic populi in mind mainly the up and coming Bahraini drivers. Bahrain took home the grand prize after a stiff competition with Egypt, Lebanon and UAE to host a grand prix in the Gulf. Along with Formula 1, it's host to a variety of races including Drags, GT races, Formula 3 and the Australian V8 Supercar Series.
In 2010, the race saw a new circuit configuration being used for the Grand Prix. It used the "Endurance Circuit" layout, extending the lap length to 6.299 km (3.914 mi). The new track turns left shortly after Turn 4, the right-hander at the top of the hill following the first sequence of turns. There is then a sequence of five turns before the cars head back to the original circuit. Then comes a left-right kink before a tight hairpin returns the cars onto the main track. The track would have reverted to its original layout for the 2011 race, and did so for the 2012 race.
Cancellations and Controversies
Not new to the F1 paddock, Bahrain saw its share of controversy in 2012, just a year after the GP was cancelled altogether in 2011.
Human rights activists called for a cancellation of the 2012 Bahrain Grand Prix, which took place on 22 April, because of reports of ongoing use of excessive force by authorities and torture in detention. Leading members of various teams supported the decision to either cancel or postpone the GP because of increasing safety concerns amid ongoing protests in the kingdom. Furthermore, a threat of a cyber attack loomed over Grand Prix and anonymous hackers took down the f1-racers.net website after launching a distributed denial-of-service attack on it.
In 2011, the race was to be rescheduled (from the 3rd spot on the calendar) at season end due to protests but was eventually cancelled, probably because a 100% agreement couldn't be achieved from the teams.
Track Features
A characteristic of the course is the giant run-off areas, which have been criticised for not punishing drivers who stray off the track. However, they tend to prevent sand getting onto the track and make Bahrain one of the safest tracks in the world.
Although alcoholic beverages are legal in Bahrain, the drivers do not spray the traditional champagne on the podium. Instead, they spray a non-alcoholic rosewater drink known as Waard.
2014
The event marks BIC’s landmark 10th anniversary as well as the 10th hosting of the Bahrain Grand Prix, which will be enjoyed by tens of thousands of race-goers and by millions more watching on live television from all over the world. Following a hugely successful first decade cementing its status as “The Home of Motorsport in the Middle East”, BIC is now headed towards a new era of prosperity where night racing will be a regular staple on the circuit’s year-long calendar of events.
Featuring 495 light posts ranging from 10m to 45m in height and 5,000 luminaries fitted, the track floodlighting system is suitable for High Definition TV broadcasting of Formula One night races and other races and events, on a variety of track configurations. Meanwhile, the installation of new artistic lighting at different locations across the track was also carried out. This enhances and supports the visual spectacle of night time racing. A new electrical distribution network will provide permanent power to the floodlight system.

I can understand why they did it, given the penalty in the race basically served no purpose as his race was already ruined.

Okay. Might have been harsh, but we've got a few people that do care and include the useful information from the get-go, not later, so they won't lose the "I was first creating it!"-fight:P
The forum reputation of said user will not be saved by that though...
I don't create such threads usually because I know that there are forum users that can do it much better than me:)

I don't think he served the penalty.
He pitted for the wing change and then retired without serving. I think that has added to the severity of the punishment.

He'll have the penalty for not serving the stop/go penalty due to retiring the car, and because there was not really any fault with the car, it's a way of cheating the rules system so it seems fair, but 5 place grid would've suited better

Actually as far as I saw, Ricciardo didn't got green light when he drove away.

From what I've seen, he was released while the front left tyre was still getting replaced. It was the mechanic's fault.

They dropped the car and the mechanic came out of the way, but the light was still red, not green.
