After todays race, my driver will have to high of an OA to keep in Rookie, and joining late in the season, I have no chance of promoting.
Do I need to hire a new driver?
Or will one be supplied like this time?

your driver stays in the team until the contract runs out.

You will need to hire a new one yourself.

There are exceptions to this:
In Rookie a driver higher than 85 overall will quit before the new season starts. In relegating, All staff higher than group maximuns will quit before new season starts.
In these cases, contract duration is of no effect.

Unless the driver's OA is over 85 and you are starting a new season in Rookie, then your driver leaves and you have to find another driver.

If you don't promote from Rookie and your driver OA is over 85 after the last race is over, your driver will leave you.
So you will have to go to the market and hire a new driver. Today's market is closed so you'll have to wait until the next market opens (which should be in Sunday).

Because you are in Rookie, you will lose the driver after season reset. You only keep the driver if its OA is below 85
You will have to get a new driver at the start of the season from the driver market yourself.
Take note that this is true only in Rookie. In Amateur and higher, you can keep the driver even after the season resets until the contract runs out even if OA exceeds the limit. :)

If you like the driver and wish to keep you can drop his motivation to 0 by going -15million+
You will lose the driver and a need a new one if OA is still too high afterward. A new driver will always be supplied to you (if you don’t sign one) but they are random and generally uncompetitive :)

Just a quick hint though, your driver really isn't the cheapest - you may not want to keep him after considering this (unless he's the next Hamilton)
|
|
|
If you go more than £15m in debt, your driver will lose all motivation and could possibly go under the 85 OA you need, assuming the current motivation is high enough of course. It's definitely worth a shot if you are looking to try and hold onto them, you are going to lose them for definite if you don't anyway.
Drop me a message if you need a hand. As Constantin said though, I'd definitely have a look for a cheaper driver long term.
Edit: Sorry Erik, just saw you had already mentioned this.

On a sidenote.
It sure is interesting how manager profiles give you their driver history isn't it... I wonder if one could possibly use that to their advantage to maybe get info to learn about drivers...
Just a thought😉

I'm not desperate to keep him, I just haven't used the market and am unsure of how and the timing of it. I don't want to replace him before tomorrow's race, but I also don't want to be without a driver for the next one.

I just got a new driver as I could not renew my old one (OA87) and after the last race the new guy went from 84 to 86. Will he leave after the next race (final one of the season?)?

Deadline for driver market is Mondays and Thursdays Tea, at 7pm C.E.T. So just gone now sadly.
You got time, there seems to be a HELL of a lot more drivers on the market than when I played a while ago, plenty of gems about :-)

You shouldn't worry too much. Before the start of the new season there are 2 staff decision deadlines (Monday and Thursday at 19 CET, although the prices for making offers start increasing some time before that). You can make up to 4 different offers for each deadline and if you want to be confident about getting a driver then you can make one bet on a driver who doesn't have any other offers, therefore increasing your chance of getting him. Even if you don't manage to get a driver from the market, you can sign a random bad driver for 1 race (and if you really want, you can even extend his contract but that's generally not advised).

This is true, however if you do not want to pay more than is necessary to make a few offers I suggest you pay attention to when the offer cost increments are (the first one is eight hours before the deadline, at 11:00 CET)

The driver transfers are on Monday and Thursdays, if you have bids then they are processed on those days, 24 hrs before the next race. You get the driver immediately so it is possible to qualify with one driver and then race with a different one. You can learn a lot by doing a lap in practice before your new driver signs, then do another after. You can do the same using testing to learn other things too.
Regarding the driver price, look at my driver, who scored points in master this season. You dont have to pay a huge amount for a capable driver, and this is important because each time you renew the contract the new price is related (somehow) to the current one, so it will spiral over a few seasons if the initial price is high.
Good luck and happy hunting! A quick note, as the end of season is now almost here - you will also have driver markets in between seasons. These can be a little busier than the ones in the season, but they also tend to have more choice.
edit - damn everyone else replied whilst I was typing and talking to my old man on the phone...

Probably your first priority should be to learn what a good driver should look like by searching the forums thoroughly during the season break. Plenty of time to learn, prepare and promote in the following season. Money management is very important in this game. There's no point paying a million for something that can be done at half or less.
