Yesterday, I saw Senna the movie, and after having watched it, I have a new found respect for him, he was jumped way up on my favorite driver list, it is now between him and Schumacher for my favorite driver. Unfortunate luck lead to his death according to the movie, any different crash angle and he would have walked away, comments on the movie in this thread, some comments on Senna as well, but the thread is more for the movie than him himself

It was probably more because of Dale Earnhardt and Luciano Burti's crashes in 2001 since it was only mandatory in 2002, besides Senna died of suspension debris hitting his helmet, his neck was probably uninjured since it wasn't a major impact.

It wasnt made mandatory until 2003 actually. It was seen for the first time in 2002 by Nick Heidfeld in the Sauber, then made mandatory after a few tweaks. But yes jed, you are right, as it wasn't Senna'a accident that made HANS mandatory it was Burti's mainly because he rolled and that was worrying, also Alesi'd crash at Hockenheim 2000 possibly contributed

Close enough :) They added more padding on it after Heidfeld tried it because it was hurting his neck.

I saw the movie and I liked it. But I don't understand why the interview with Prost (the nowadays one) was shown on such a low quality. And the editing could have been better. Sometimes the interviewed paused or finished what they wanted to say and that was left on the film.
By the way, there are a short movie and a longer movie. I saw the longer version.

he was the real hero of his time...on the race day he was sad about the death of Ratzenberger..he met the race drivers on his last day and planned to create grand Prix drivers association....

I suppose yeah, I forgot about his crash at Spa too, that was very hard he hit the barrier and he was knocked out after if I remember rightly :P

People, Senna was a great driver but don´t forget Alain Prost. The challenge between this drivers was the reason for millions of F1 fans.

I'm not sureif it was just the version I was watching, but there was too many parts in other languages. (French, Brazillian, Italian) without any subtitles. So I'd sit there for 2-3 mintues looking at some guy talking all excitedly and I couldn't know what he was saying!

Schumacher is a great driver, but you can not compare with Senna

For a 3-hour-long movie, it seemed pretty incomplete. Yes, there were some incredible shots from his funeral, but there was nothing about the 1993 Donington race, also nothing about his chase with Mansell at Monaco, nothing about the time when he jumped from his car to save Comas's life. In my view, these were mandatory if someone wanted to show the world who Senna really was.

It's a great documentary, but leaves out some (I believe) key issues.
Then again, I only saw the short cinema version, the full version in 3.5 hours.

Actually, hes just a record breaker, when didnt had any real competition around (specially from his teammates).
When he had that competition, he simply wasnt up to it, and whenever possible used any means necessary to achieve them (often illegal).

I particularly didnt like the implication that Senna would have won the 1989 world title but for his dq in Japan, which is completely misleading.
I was alsso quite disappointed that Gerhard Berger didnt feature at all, as you'd have thought he would have been a prominant figure in hte documentary.
But these are minor gripes really, it's really a very enjoyable watch.

seen replays, and apparently I saw the shorter movie (only 1 hour 45 minutes) But both Senna and Schumacher were good in their own ways, and I am not fully convinced that the accident is Schumacher's fault

Senna was totally the best , and i don't think anyone better could be born. He wasn't only the best driver, but he died fighting for better conditions for F1 , he was against all that politic decisions.Senna was a very good person at all. I'm fifteen , and until today i see my father crying when he sees something about the best driver ever, we all really miss that races, and when I see videos about his races, i understand why he is so respected. Don't even think about comparing Shumi and Senna, it's two different times in F1, most of Schumacher titles he had the best car, and that's not what hapenned to Ayrton. It's like the say, Senna was the Pelé of Formula1 =)

He arguably had the best car in 2001.
He did not have the best car in 1994, 1995, 2000 or 2003. He arguably did not have the best car in 2001.
edit: 2003 might be arguable too...in 2003 the mclarens, williams and ferraris were all basically equal, so it's arguable. Either way, 94,95 and 2000 are not arguable. He did not have the best car those seasons at all.

I'd say the most important part of Schumis succes wasn't having the best car, but knowing all the limits of the car due to enormous amounts of time spent testing.
