I noticed that many languages (especially Asian languages, e.g. Chinese, Japanese, Korean) are unavailable in GPRO. I'm wondering if we can have an official localization project for volunteers to help translate the interface/game rules/FAQs, etc.

I believe this would be a very efficient way to promote GPRO to more players.

I'm a university student from China and (I believe) I'm relatively proficient in English. I have previous translation experience as a TED Translator. I'd love to spend some of my spare time to help translate and promote this game to Chinese racing fans.

Of course you can, the reason why there is not a Chinese translation is due to the fact that no one has ventured to do it before.

Not many Chinese or Japanese playing the gae

PM Vlad with your request so he can set you up as translator

Chinese translation was once started by Jun Ho (Hong Kong), but don't know where he left it

There are very few Chinese players indeed. Apart from the fact that there’s no Chinese localization/promotion, there’s probably some other reasons: 1. Time zone problems, the races all happen at around 2AM; 2. No suitable payment methods, not a lot of people use credit cards, and hardly anyone uses PayPal here in China

That would certainly raise the Gpro image in that market. I wish I could contribute. :)

I can't offer any solution to number 2, but you don't need to be online at race time. That's the beauty of this game. You can 'play' at a time to suit you.

That's is a good point, while e-money is really common in China, but they use a quite different system from people outside China. AliPay is very common in China (and in Malaysia too) but not sure how common it is in Europe/America.

I just checked and found that we do actually already have mandarin version of GPRO in place :)

If it is available to you, then that's only because you are a translator and have access to unpublished languages. There is no Chinese version available to us commoners. ;)

Indeed.

Edit: Dom once showed me 'his' list of languages, I think there's like 6-8 which are not available to regular users. But I may remember incorrectly, it was a long time ago.

Thanks to Dariya, I managed to access the Chinese version!

But I can confirm that the translation is not satisfactory: many of the entries are missing/misleading, and some of the longer sentences are kinda like machine translations :(

All the more reason to make some improvements!

As is the case with every language, the admins rely on volunteers to create a translation.

Some languages may have had translations started but not to a level that it has been released to the public (as appears to be the case with some mentioned above).

As Eduardo correctly says, if you are interested in becoming a translator, then you should PM Vlad with your interest.

Hey there, I did some of the Chinese translation in the past but it was just too much work. Contact me on WeChat at 47380242, and we may work together on that! Thx!

Hmm. I know that Alipay and WeChat Pay are started to be used in the United States, but not sure how they are doing so far in Europe.

For sure, not as spread as credit card (and I would say, cc is still better in safety) and as Hancheng mentioned, almost no people are using Paypal here, unless they are studying in Europe/America then they have all those (incl. Venmo, etc.)

I did do some of the translation sometime back but it was too much, the new additions seems to be greater than the amount I did per day, so I sort of gave up!

Not sure if at one point, some of the translations were done by google translate in the past. Because when I started off, there were quite a number of translations done in a google translate sort of manner.

I don’t mind restarting and doing a bit here and there, but I think it might be good to standadise among the helpers what vocab us being used to describe certain terms in game? So as to avoid confusion from having 2-3 different words describing the same thing! As certain countries would describe certain words and terms differently for Chinese!

You are right! And I assume that we are referring to Simplified Chinese here and the main target should be Mainland China?

Actually I myself is working in Sports Industry and I was responsible for all terms' translation there. I noticed the difference of what we are using is different with Hong Kong and Taiwan, and they are using the Traditional Chinese there, so this could be a challenging thing.

The other thing I have noticed was the language difference. One example is: GPRO asked me to translate "Round" for "Round 1" and "Round 2". However, we are using "第1轮", "第2轮" for this.... (That is: No. X Round).

Sometimes you'll have find a compromise. Like I had to do with polish grammar in certain situations. Vlad can change the structure of the string, but it would mean a necessary update of all other languages.

PS. Maybe a Chinese language forum will be easier for you to discuss the vocabulary? ;-)
