F1 Revisited – 1958

Last season saw a year of domination for Bob Gerard, as he claimed his 4th Drivers title. This has caused the F1R FIA to bring in the biggest set of rule changes the series has ever seen, which should mean closer racing and the chance for most driver/team combinations to claim the title! With the Teams Championship now introduced there are twice as many Championships to compete for than last season!

Nevertheless, a smooth driving style, with timely gear changes, well-marked braking points, a feel for the changing track conditions and the best strategy should ultimately come out on top this time around…plus, manage your money well and spend it wisely to ensure you are in the best position for next season!

Final Standings

https://i.imgur.com/xYP1TXF.jpg

After a thrilling season-long battle it is Wolfgang von Trips who is confirmed as the 1958 Drivers' Champion!!! After finishing 4th and 6th in the two seasons prior it is a real step-up in form that has earned him this title - and 4 race victories this season proves too much for any other driver to contend with in the end.

Gerard takes 2nd, as he brings his illustrious career to a close - having won 4 titles in total and taken practically every record on offer in the process...will we ever see his like again...?

Brabham produces a strong season to finish 3rd - a big step up from 16th last time around - even if his own title challenge did rather faulter in the final three races. Salvadori meanwhile moves up to 4th position after a very strong final three races that will throw up some interesting questions about Ferrari's driver line-up next season!

Herrmann drops to 5th in the final reckoning after a second DNS of the season...but after achieving two race victories this year (a total only bested by von Trips with 4 and only equalled by Gerard with 2) he will certainly be one to watch next season.

Gould meanwhile took advantage of the Ferrari's pace at times this season - though 6th overall is perhaps testament largely to the pace of his car than his own particular skill...though he did finish the season well. Bonnier had a consistent season with Maserati to finish 7th overall after his move from the Connaught team did wonders for his results!

Musso's 2nd place today helps lift him up to 8th in the final standings as he bows out of the championship, with Piotti also leaving in 9th after his two early-season podium finishes were as good as his year got! Gibson is another to bid farewell to the series in 11th after a stunning victory at his home Grand Prix will be a memory he can cherish for the rest of his days...

Chiron (11th), Collins (14th), Hawthorn (19th), Fangio (23rd) and Menditeguy (28th) all bow out of the F1R series after careers that will be remembered for many seasons to come...while Marsh (26th), Bridger (29th), Emery (30th) and Godia (31st) all likewise retire - but are maybe less likely to be remembered in future seasons!

That leaves Behra 12th, Graham Hill 13th after a strong season end for BRM, Flockhart 15th after a season of never quite managing to make it into the points, Fairman 16th after a year where he arguably deserved more, de Beaufort 17th, Trintignant 18th after carrying the torch for Porsche all year and Brooks 20th (though all his results came early on in the season) all likely to be back next season. That is along with Gendebien 21st, Moss in 22nd after his - and Connaught's - best finish of the season catapults him past the aforementioned Fangio and Schell in the Porsche too; the latter of whom should also return along with McLaren 25th, Scarlatti 27th, Phil Hill 32nd and then potentially even Alan Stacey and Masten Gregory after their limited involvement in the 1958 season.

https://i.imgur.com/0gh2xsM.jpg

Another table that von Trips sits at the top of, which really shows the secret to his success! Fairman does well to finish 2nd overall, and will certainly be in demand for next season's Driver market...while Brabham, Bonnier, Gerard, Collins, Piotti, Gould, Musso and Herrmann all show themselves as being the class of the field this time around - and those back next season will also be in real demand as well!

https://i.imgur.com/uO066uI.jpg

No change in the final standings, with Ferrari already confirmed champions after taking their 5th win of the series, followed by Maserati with two victories, Cooper with two further victories and BRM with just the one victory overall.

OSCA's surprise podium at Silverstone is enough to see them finish 5th in a position that would otherwise certainly have been occupied by the ever-consistent Vanwall team that finish 6th overall. Porsche finish 7th after their season long battle with Connaught and Lotus, where Connaught finish 8th and it is Lotus who end up bottom of the pile.

We bid farewell to OSCA this season, after their best ever season (their previous best being just one 3rd placed finish in 1951) sees them elect to bow out of the championship...though with both JBW and Aston Martin joining next season it will be interesting to see how they fare in trying to fill their shoes!!!

Game Play

Each “race weekend” will consist of a single qualifying session and the race. For each qualifying lap you will input a set of instructions about how to take each corner (what gear, how late to brake, what risk to use), on your own personal Google Doc spreadsheet, meaning you can do your qualifying laps whenever you like!

You will then get feedback on your own spreadsheet for each lap – please note; going too fast will cause you to damage your car, so you may want to start slower and then build up your pace! You can of course change your approach lap by lap to improve your time, but you must run 1 lap at a time. Qualifying is run as one continuous session, so you will simply have a car with enough fuel to do the entire session – as a result you won’t ever alter your fuel amount in qualifying, though you may pit to repair damage to the car.

Once qualifying is wrapped up the grid will be determined, and you can input your instructions for the race itself (note – you do not need to wait until qualifying is finished to input these). Again, these will be in the form of braking distance, gear selection, risk levels etc done on a separate tab of your own Google Doc spreadsheet.

You will also pre-determine your pit strategy, but should your car become damaged during the race this may be fatal and lead to a retirement, so it is good to push the limits of your setup but not to exceed them. Finally - given the limited amount of mechanics, if two (or more) cars from the same team pit on the same lap they will be queued behind each other and lose a realistic amount of time so make sure you coordinate your strategies!

The Instructions

For each corner you need to submit a gear from the pre-allocated range your car has, and a braking point that should be from 0m up to around 250m or so. The more you push in a lap the better the chance of a good lap time, but equally the more chance of you making a mistake and costing you valuable time to fix your car.

Qualifying

Here is an example of how your spreadsheet will look:

https://i.imgur.com/dA2hjUI.jpg

There is also a Feedback Tab that shows you how well you are performing vs the optimal gears & braking choices, as can be seen here:

https://i.imgur.com/9YbtYjY.jpg

Please note that instructions are included there, plus of course your team-mates and I will be able to help you with anything that isn’t immediately apparent.

Race

There is a Race Setup tab on your sheet that you simply need to fill in to confirm your race setup & strategy.

The race is simulated by JB from that point onwards.

Collisions

New for the 1958 season is the possibility of collisions within the race – this will be worked out by looking at any blocking situation. If the two cars in a blocking situation have a combined risk level of 6 or above then there is a chance a collision may occur – this will be worked out by adding the combined risk level to a dice roll (generated by the RANDBETWEEN function in Excel) and if the total is 12 or higher this will cause a collision between the two cars.

e.g. If 1 driver has Risk L5 and another has Risk L1, the combined total is 6. That means only a roll of 6 can cause a collision. If, however, both drivers have Risk L5 then any roll other than a 1 will cause a collision.

Damage from Collisions

In a collision the amount of damage caused to your car will be determined by a calculation based on three factors:

1) Your risk level
2) Your position in the overall car setup leaderboard for the race
3) The lap length (the longer the lap the more severe damage will be and vice versa)

As a general rule the better your setup overall, the higher risks you will be able to run without doing awful damage to your car (the idea being that the better the car handles, the better you are able to keep it out of the barriers/generally control it).

After any collision your driver will calculate whether it is better to limp round with the damage or pit now (simply by looking at the amount of seconds it costs per lap vs how long a pit-stop takes). This will not impact strategy as no fuel or tyres will be changed in a damage related stop.

If your driver chooses to stay out, this damage will continue until the next scheduled pit-stop, where your driver will sit in your pit-box for the same number of seconds extra to repair the damage. Emerging from the pits your car will be fully repaired again!

If 3 collisions occur with the same driver in the same stint that driver will retire from the race.

Team Principals

These people are responsible for the running of the 9 F1R teams for 1958. Those at the top of the all-time Drivers’ points table were given 1st choice of which team they want to manage last season, and all agreed to carry on in their roles. This season every one of them has an objective to try to achieve, which will determine if they carry on in that Team Principal role. In order to be a Team Principal in future, you simply need to finish as high up as possible in the Drivers Standings to be offered the chance to take over a team.

Team Principals for 1958 are as follows:

BRM – Janne Väänänen
Connaught – Mark Witney
Cooper – Kyle Morris
Ferrari – Tim Wagner
Lotus – Jun Ho
Maserati – John Ibbotson
OSCA – Josh Anderson
Porsche – Rocco Stallone
Vanwall – Mike Baston

More information on the ins and outs of their roles/responsibilities can be found in their own separate thread here:

36 seats immediately available in F1 Revisited this season with another 19 on stand-by! That means initially there are only 4 seats per team available!!!

The Driver Allocation

Drivers who competed last season will be allocated to the same people as before, as long as either a) the driver or b) the person did not retire before the ’58 season. These drivers are fixed and cannot be changed until the driver actually retires from Formula 1. The only exception is the winning driver from the previous season, who will always return to defend their title.

Initial driver confirmations have already been completed by PM. Now ALL DRIVERS in the game will agree their salaries with the Team Principal (these are real GPRO players as per the above list), and both should send me a copy of the contract filled in identically:

Driver Name –
Team Name –
Contract Length – X years
Signing Bonus – £X
Salary – £X
Contribution (the amount the driver is going to give towards the team’s development) – £X

Previous drivers still in use are shown here:

https://i.imgur.com/RN1qflV.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/Sm6YxcH.jpg?1

If you are new to the game, or if you or your driver dropped out from last season then you will need to select a new driver from the list of available drivers below (note, the Indy 500 representatives are not permitted):

https://i.imgur.com/txh1Gfb.jpg

You will represent the same driver in the following years and cannot ditch him until he retires, so if you have your eye on someone who started racing in 1959 it is advisable to choose a driver who did not compete in that season – though winning the whole thing would of course prevent you from using said 1959 driver.

Drivers have been allocated in order of championship position last season, and now on a 1st come 1st served basis to new players once joining starts. There is no competitive advantage to be gained between drivers, aside from the driver multiplier.

The Teams

As in real F1 the chassis you have under you is crucial and the actual performance of each will vary, though only in as much as the top speed and gears available initially (overall the field will be quite evenly matched). That said, money for manufacturer upgrades will become available based on how accurately your car is setup and how your team performs in the race, so even the worst car on the grid can achieve performance upgrades if the players do well.

You cannot change teams during a season, though you are not tied in to the same team for future seasons…also a winning constructor will be permitted to stay on if it did not compete in the next season. Team choices will be down to the team principals to agree with the drivers; each team has the same multiplier limit so some of the top teams may take a punt on a brand-new driver (this is to try and ensure even competition).

The full list of competing cars is here, with the + amount of entries referring to the maximum possible for each team…bear in mind the team may decide not to fill all these spots initially.

Entrant – Engine – Chassis (No. of driver spaces)

BRM – BRM – P25 (4)
Connaught – Alta – B Type (4)
Cooper – Climax – T45 (4)
Ferrari – Ferrari – 256 (4)
Lotus – Climax – 16 (4)
Maserati – Maserati – 250F (4)
OSCA – OSCA – F2 (4)
Porsche – Porsche – 718 RSK (4)
Vanwall – Vanwall – VW5 (4)

This means that a total of 55 drivers can compete in this 8th season, although initially only 36 will be offered contracts.

Money

Here is the current financial situation for the drivers:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LGI_dFWpYhj43VCQE6ki...

Please note – from this season onwards you can only spend money if you are in positive balance. You can still go into negative money with a single purchase but won’t be able to buy anything else until you’re back in the black.

There are several things that money can be used to purchase, as follows:

Multiplier Boosts

Every driver has a multiplier figure, which is based on their experience in F1R. However you can boost this figure in the short-term by purchasing some of the following improvements:

https://i.imgur.com/xmw4cGR.jpg

Homes

You can live anywhere in the world that you want to …if you can afford it. To buy a house in a country other than that of your birth will cost a premium, but will allow you to test on that track between races so when the Grand Prix circus finally shows up to town you will be quicker at that track. Simply send a PM with the words “Quote on a house in COUNTRY NAME(S)” and I will respond with the relevant prices to do so. You may have more than 1 house, but this will dilute your multiplier by the amount of houses you own.

Citizenship

A long and drawn out 5 year process, but you can change the country you represent by living there for 5 years in a row…this will allow drivers who may not have a home GP the chance to get the small speed boost that your favourite track affords you. Simply send a PM with the words “Apply for Citizenship” and your application will begin the long process of being put through. Dual citizenship is a possibility too.

1958 Financial Rewards

Money is given for the following achievements:

Championship & Setup Rankings:
1st place – £3,000
2nd place – £2,500
3rd place – £2,000
4th place – £1,750
5th place – £1,500
6th place – £1,250
7th place – £1,000
8th place – £750
9th place – £625
10th place – £500
11th place – £450
12th place – £400
13th place - £350
14th place - £300
15th place - £250
And so on until…
20th place – £25

Race:
1st place – £250
2nd place – £100
3rd place – £50

Incidentals:
Pole Position – £50
Fastest Lap – £50
Per point (inc. dropped scores & FL) – £10 * NOT given to Podium finishers any more
Best Setups - £100/£50/£20 for the Top 3 at each race

End of Season

Top performer in the team - £500 * NOT given to overall Champion any more
Best improvement in a race - £200
Most race finishes in a season - £500 * NOT given to overall Champion any more
Per objective achieved over the season - £200 * NOT given to overall Champion any more

Please note that you will be taxed 20% for every £1 you finish the season over the £10,000 mark.

1957 Earnings:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B0jKvdmMJdvPdwnIL64Y...

For next season if you lost your driver you will still carry the same financial clout with the new driver, likewise if a new player takes over a previous driver they will take over any finances associated with them.

Also, driver multiplier does NOT go with you to a new driver - so if you are taking on a new driver they will start with a multiplier value of just 1.00.

ALL DRIVERS should fill in the following simple form to join:

Driver –
Any other information you want to give to appeal to the Team Principals –

PLEASE NOTE – Though all efforts have been made to make this historically accurate there is likely to be some departure, if I have made any errors regarding (for example) the gear a corner is to be taken at I can only apologise. I do welcome feedback to improve the game moving forwards.

New Season Changes

Some things to look out for:

1 – Driver multiplier effect muted again – They will still have an impact, but not such a big one.
2 – However, a higher multiplier will have an impact on the risk levels you can use without having a negative impact.
3 – This will also have an impact on collision likelihood – and it is worth noting that collisions could happen at any time, particularly if blocking has happened several times in a row!
4 – You are now able to ‘Let team-mates by’ when inputting your race setups
5 – There is now an ‘Amazing’ option in feedback, so you can see when you are getting really close to taking a corner well
6 – The importance of getting your setup correct is now more important than ever, and you will earn bonuses for achieving the best setups on the grid
7 – If you go too fast in qualifying while searching for the perfect setup this will cause significantly more damage – which in turn will take longer to fix. Be aware!
8 – Pit-stop times will be increased to factor in how long a real-life stop would take back in the 1950s. The figure shown in the track overview will refer only to the length of the pit-lane, as opposed to the time for a stop overall.
9 – Team Principals now need to look at what car parts to use, and so factories now make more sense than ever to invest in!
10 – Speaking of investment, investing in next season’s car is now a possibility for Team Principals
11 – Rather than the weather always mirroring real-life there is a 66% chance that it will be like that, and a 33% chance that it may be different (all based off a dice roll for each race)

Connaught have announced the signing of Stirling Moss - Team Principal Mark Witney has stated he is delighted to have brought a driver of Moss's experience to the struggling British outfit and not only that, but he also finds him something of a kindred spirit too!

Moss arrives at Connaught with the distinction of being the 8th highest points scorer in F1R history, though he is also the man with the 5th most races without obtaining a single victory in all that time...maybe 1958 is the season he bucks that trend in...

Multiplier I presume you mean?

I will see how it goes - but while improving your multiplier is still a good thing to do, it no longer carries the weight of before.  So I don't want to then make it that you can massively increase your multiplier to have the sort of effect it used to.

Hence leaving it as is for now - will review mid-season if I feel it's causing an issue...

Cooper have confirmed the signing of Ron Flockhart on a two year contract.  After a couple of inauspicious seasons with the likes of HWM and Bugatti (both of which didn't have the funding for a drive all season long!) the 1957 season was Flockhart's first full season on the grid and 19th place overall in the Drivers Championship with a best finish of 7th at his home Grand Prix proved enough to emerge as 3rd best Cooper driver of the season ahead of both Moss and Herrmann!

He does have the distinction of being the driver with the 3rd most races without scoring a single point (behind only Harry Schell and and the retired Louis Rosier in that regard) - but hopefully this season is where his luck will finally change!!!

Champion Bob Gerard confirms his 3rd straight season with Maserati, and after back-to-back titles there is a question over whether this combination can be the 1st ever to produce three championships in a row!  This would go along with the multitude of records he already holds, including *deep breath* Most Race Entries, Most Race Starts, Most Wins (Overall, Consecutive and %), Most Hat-Tricks, Most Points, Most Points Finishes (inc. Most Consecutive Points Finishes), Most Fastest Laps (Overall and Consecutive), Most Pole Positions (Overall and Consecutive), Most Podiums (Overall, % and Consecutive) and the Most Championships ever!!!

Maserati have also confirmed the signing of Luigi Piotti for a 2nd season, who is the 6th most experienced driver in F1R history that is yet to score points...so a bit of a contrast to Gerard!  But after a 6th place at his home Grand Prix at Monza in the final race of 1957 (which moved him up to 15th overall) there is significant potential for him to do more!

Another signing for Maserati, as Joakim Bonnier transfers over from Connaught - after an unfulfilling finish to last season where he didn't contest a race after Race 3 (yet still managed to finish in the Top 20!) the Swede felt it was time for a change.

While he may sit within the Top 10 for Most Races without Points, Bonnier is keen to avoid moving further up that list and instead contribute to the teams points haul for this season!

Damn I really wish this game wasn't so complicated and unlikely for me to stay with it for a whole season, because it's such an amazing one.

Not so complicated - you just need to choose a gear and braking point for each corner.

You last played in 1955, since then it has got much more streamlined and user-friendly.  If you're interested in trying the new version just choose a driver and post ##Join :)

Ferrari boss Tim Wagner has been busy signing drivers, as he secures the services of Roy Salvadori for 1958 - after the Vanwall driver's inauspicious end to last season (with a retirement and a lowly 15th place finish in the final two rounds) dropped him to 9th overall tensions with the Vanwall team reached breaking point and the Brit elected to move elsewhere!

As the driver with the 5th most starts ever (including 3 poles, 2 wins and over 50 points!) he brings some level-headed experience to the team...which is the polar opposite of the energy and youthfulness that Horace Gould brings to the Ferrari fold, and has now brought for the last two seasons in a row.

After scoring his 1st points last season and finishing 12th overall Gould will be hoping to build on that and move into the Top 10 in 1958.

Vanwall have managed to lure one of Maserati's bright young stars over, as Carel Godin de Beaufort puts pen to paper to sign for the British marque.  After securing one 11th place last season for Maserati, but ultimately not being anywhere near the lead driver, the Dutchman elected to move out of Gerard's shadow and join the Vanwall outfit!

If he were to win a race this season it would be one of the earliest victories by a driver in their career ever...

Tony Brooks has put pen to paper for Vanwall again; after a disappointing campaign last time that yielded only two starts and just a 24th place finish the driver looks to be reinvigorated for the 1958 campaign - which can hardly be worse than last time out!!!

So I've been thinking about the idea of adding bots in for those teams with less than 3 contracted drivers.  Unless we get 1 new player to make a grid of 27 it's guaranteed that at least 1 team (possibly more) will have less than the 3 driver counters that are going to be needed this season.

Couple of ideas to rectify this:

1 - Bot drivers would come into the race for those with less than 3 drivers - randomly chosen for the season these bots would be paid a salary of £10 per race and would trundle round at the back, not getting into collisions or doing much.  They would finish the race behind the final driver to finish the race and be credited the position/points (very unlikely!) that go along with that.  To decide which bot driver comes out ahead would be determined by which team had the best positions in the 'Closest to perfect' leader-board.

2 - I simply count the missing people in my final reckoning as a counter that finished last +1, as compared to drivers missing a race that are last +2.

Open to any other thoughts on this - I'm not open to losing a team, and clearly the ideal is that we get more players on board, but looking for contingencies if this doesn't happen :|
