Race 4 - Serres GP (Greece)

Grid: Shiv, Sergeev, Boryczka, Dragusanu, Brown, Kell, Tepes, Alan, Jakobsson, Kunc
Race 4 saw the racers head to Greece, where the Russians dominatied qualifying with Shiv and Sergeev both on row 1. The third Russian of the group had the opposite luck however, and Polikarpov found himself at the very back of the grid in P39.

Shiv was fastest off the grid and immediately took a commanding lead ahead of Kell, who had a brilliant start from 6th. Dragusanu and Brown also had great starts and found themselves in 3rd and 4th. It was soon evident that Shiv and Kell were clearly faster than the rest, and they opened up a gap to Dragusanu in 3rd pretty quickly. Lap times were pretty similar from 3rd down to 13th at this stage as the cars were racing close together on the track.

After 10 laps Shiv led Kell by 4,6 seconds, and Dragusanu by 11,5 seconds, which means that he gained more than 1 second a lap which is quite something on this short track. Dragusanu was under pressure though from faster cars behind him, with Brown making moves on him without any success.

Not much more happened at this stage as the standings remained the same in the top 10, and 20 laps in Shiv still had 5 seconds on Kell and now 18,9 on Dragusanu. Dragusanu was then closely followed by Brown in 4th, Sergeev in 5th, then Tepes, Alan, Boryczka, Alger, Barnes and Obeid, with Jakobsson and Porta trailing. The next car train was led by Calaan in 15th ahead of Seolin in 15th, Haendel in 16th followed by Traby in 17th.

On lap 22 Dragusanu hade the mistake Brown had been waiting for and fell all the way to 11th. His race never really recovered after this and he barely ran in the top 10 again this race, eventually suffering mechanical problems and finishing down in 26th.

Faras was the first car on track to suffer mechanical problems, but he was outside the top 20 at this point so I guess he did not anticipate getting too much out of this race anyway.
After 25 laps worn tire signs could be seen here and there on the standings board, and Obeid was first in from 10th, and he rejoined in 22nd. He had a pretty rough race and I suspect he was the victim of blocking. He finished 17th in the end. On the next lap Shiv and Kell both came in, and came out a very respectable 7th and 9th.

Strategywise the race proved very interesting and after 32 laps it was evident that roughly half the field were doing 1 stop and the rest on 2-stops or more. Fonseca was the second guy with car trouble as he started to smoke from P12 after 32 laps.

After 35 laps, with the 1-stoppers yet to come in, Brown found himself in the lead, with a slender 2-second gap down to Sergeev. Alger had a quiet but effective race and was now 3rd with the chasing Shiv only 6,5 seconds off the lead. Jakobsson had gone long and found himself in 5th chased by Kell, with Calaan, Haendel, Traby and Mendes also in the top 10. Seolin was 11th ahead of Braun and the race winner from Monza, Kapicow.

As we approached the halfway point, Sergeev was fast and closed in on Brown, the gap down to 0,6 seconds, Alger 2 seconds behind and Shiv just 4,2 seconds off, ahead of Jakobsson a distant 5th almost 13 seconds behind. The fight for the lead was very tense at this point. However, the pit window for the 1-stoppers was about to open.

On lap 38 there was absolute disaster for Mendes. He had started a lowly 26th but fought himself all the way up to 9th on a night where his Contimental tyres were very effective, only to see all the hard work undone by a random tyre puncture on lap 38, and he was effectively out of the race.
After exactly half the race, Brown and Sergeev both entered the pits, handing the lead to Shiv. The battle of the pit crews had a clear winner, Sergeev had a very fast 18,550 stop compared to a relatively slow 23,3 from Brown. Jakobsson came in from 4th on the next lap, and rejoined in 14th after a 23-second stop. Alger was in on the folliowing lap and had a very quick 20,7 stop and he was out in 7th.

Calaan came in on lap 46 from 3rd, and came out in 13th. The "last man to pit"-award this time was shared between Calaan and Dave Sunderland, who also came in on lap 46.

So Shiv was back in the lead, 9,6 seconds ahead of Kell. Sergeev was 34 seconds behind and Brown 38, but they were done in the pits. This could be an interesting strategy battle indeed.
Shiv's hopes of winning took a fatal blow on lap 48 however, as he suffered mechanical problems. It turned out to be fixable, but cost him dearly as he had to stop again, making his 2-stop strategy an unwanted 3-stopper. After his third stop he was running as low as 9th, but after a brilliant drive the last 20 laps he still amazingly managed to grab a podium finish.
This played straight into the hands of Kell, who was suddenly top dog, with a half minute down to Sergeev and Brown. That was pretty much how things stayed until the 2-stoppers entered their pit window for their final stops.

Kell came in on lap 55, and came out only a couple of seconds behind Sergeev, but right in front of Brown. A very nice place to be in for the last 25 laps on fresh tires. Any hopes of a win were gone a lap later though as his car started to smoke, and his gradual slide down the field began, and eventually he finished 12th, not more than 10 seconds from a points finish.
Sergeev was now in the lead, with Brown 4,7 seconds behind, Alan in 3rd 4,8 seconds behind but with a stop still left to do, then the smoking Kell and then Alger.

Top guys smoking seemed to be the order of the day however, and on lap 63 it was Sergeev's turn to do so. His lead was very slim and only a couple of laps later Brown stormed past him into the lead, with Alger soon following past. Boryczka was now 3rd but with his odd strategy of stopping on lap 35 and 70 he had to surrender his podium spot with 10 laps left.

The ending of the race proved truly bizarre. Brown and Alger had a smooth ride at the front, Boryczka was 3rd but had to pit, Sergeev was smoking in 4th and Kell was smoking in 5th. The guy who could benefit from all that, Jakobsson in 6th, also started to smoke! So who was in 7th, ready to storm into 3rd? Ilya Shiv, who after his earlier misfortune was now on the podium!

In a race of many smokers, 9 to be exact, and 1 retirement, anyone with decent race pace and more importantly a functioning car had a decent shout at points. In the end Brown just barely managed to hold off a storming Alger to get the win, the margin being a very slender 0,293 seconds. Shiv finished 3rd, Tepes and Alan finished 4th and 5th, Calaan had a great race and finished 6th. Seolin was 7th and Barnes 8th, both scoring points for the first time this season. Boryczka finished 9th and Traby climbed 9 places during the race to finish 10th.

Championship standings after 4 rounds: Brown 22, Sergeev 21, Kell 20, Alger 16, Shiv 15, Parker 12, Kapicow 10, Jakobsson 8, Tepes 8, Calaan 7, Alan 6, Mendes 4, Fernandez 3, Seolin 2, Boryczka 1, Barnes 1.

Next race is tomorrow in my neighbour country Finland, good luck everyone!

S72, Race 5: Ahvenisto GP (Finland)

Grid: Sergeev, Brown, Boryczka, Kell, Papanikolaou, Shiv, Alan, Sunderland, Alger, Dragusanu

Next race on the calendar was Ahvenisto, and the top 3 in the championship standings were dominating qualifying, ending up in P1, P2 and P4. The big surprise was Papanikolaou whose previous best in qualifying was 24th, now lining up in 5th.

Brown was fastest in the early laps, passing Sergeev and starting to open up a slight gap, with Papanikolaou 3rd and Kell 4th ahead of Alger and Shiv. Fonseca made a storming start from 14th and was in 7th place after just 2 laps. The top 3 of Brown, Sergeev and Papanikolaou was all within 0,5 seconds of each other after 5 laps and they had a 3-second gap down to Kell at this point.

On lap 14 Papanikolaou suddenly made a move on Brown and got the lead! It was not a surprise as he had botched a number of attempts on the previous laps. Sergeev was now 3rd. Kell and Alger were 4 seconds behind in 4th and 5th followed by Shiv, Fonseca, Boryczka, Alan and Haendel in the top 10.

On lap 16 Calaan, running in 14th, had his race completely destroyed as his car started to malfuction. Although the problem proved fixable, he dropped to 33rd. Even though he was able to make up a lot of ground later in the race he finished a distant 21st, his first finish outside the top 10 this season.

Meanwhile, Haendel had made good progress through the field. Starting 16th, he was making his way through the field passing lots of cars where overtakings were not very common, and he was running as high as 6th before pitting for the first time on a 2-stop strategy. Unfortunately he was not able to keep it up for the entire race and he finished just outside the top 10 in 11th place.

After 20 laps there was now two big trains of cars going around the track. The first "train" was led by Shiv in 6th and included Fonseca, Boryczka, Haendel, Alan and Tepes. Seven seoncds furhter behind there was yet another train led by Sunderland, with Porta, Parker, Jakobsson, Obeid and Kapikow.
Sergeev was the first of the front runners to come in on lap 21. The polesitter had opted for a 3-stop strategy and had probably hoped to be quick enought to avoid too much blocking. Unforuntately for him he came out in 17th and since there were many 1-stoppers ahead his race was compromised significantly and in the end he had to settle for 9th, which was probably a disappointment for him.

After 25 laps there were quite a few cars out there with wobbly tires, a sure sign the 2-stoppers were coming in soon. After lap 33 all of the 2-stoppers had been in and of course that meant the 1-stoppers were now at the top of the leaderboard. Brown was now 1st ahead of Alger, these two have been running close together so many times this season already! Kell was 3rd, Shiv 4th, Jakobsson 5th, Obeid 6th, Kapicow 7th and then Sergeev was the first one to have already pitted in 8th, Papanikolaou in 9th had also been in bit not Mendes in 10th.

Mendes decided to play the long game on his Contimentals and did so very successfully, and when he finally dedided to pit on lap 51 (!) he did so from the lead. He emerged in 9th but immediately profited from others around him pitting and he capped off an excellent race by finishing on the podium in 3rd.

With 25 laps to go, the 2-stoppers came in again. Pananikolaou had inherited the lead from Mendes but came in on lap 57, handing the lead back to Brown, who was done in the pits, and things were looking very good for the Englishman. Kell was now 2nd ahead of Alger and Shiv, all done in the pits, with Boryczka in 5th, Sergeev in 6th and Mendes in 7th ahead of Papanikolaou in 8th, Obeid in 9th and Fonseca in 10th.

Mendes was the man on the move now, from 7th on lap 60 he overtook Sergeev when he pitted for his 3rd stop to move into 6th. Then he passed Boryczka, whose tires were completely gone to move into 5th. Then he passed Shiv on the start/finish straight, being about 8 tenths of a second per lap faster. He then started to haul in Alger in 3rd second by second, and he eventually made a move stick on the inside of turn 4 on lap 71 to move up into 3rd.

Brown had a nice and easy ride the last 10 laps and took the win, 13,7 seconds ahead of Kell. Mendes was 3rd, Alger 4th and Shiv 5th. Papanikolaou scored his first points of the season in 6th, Obeid had gained 15 places during the race and finished 8th and Fonseca also scored his first point of the season in 8th. Sergeev finished 9th and Kapicow 10th.

Championship standings: Brown 32, Kell 28, Sergeev 21, Alger 21, Shiv 19, Parker 12, Kapicow 10, Mendes 10, Jakobsson 8, Tepes 8, Calaan 7, Alan 6, Papanikolaou 3, Fernandez 3, Seolin 2, Obeid 2, Boryczka 1, Barnes 1, Fonseca 1.

Impressive performance: Walid Obeid - From a lowly 22nd starting position he patiently gained place after place in a first stint that made him briefly run in the lead (!) before 1-stopping on lap 43. His drop to 13th meant he had to be fast yet again and stormed back into 7th to score points in a race where overtaking was difficult at times.

Race to forget: Philppe Calaan - a cruel victim of a "random", his plans went out the window and his superb string of top 10-finishes was broken.

Race tonight at Sahkir, best of luck to you all!

Season 72, Round 9 - Sochi GP

Grid: Calaan, Brown, Kell, Sergeev, Alger, Seolin, Dragusanu, Boryczka, Barnes, Obeid.

38 drivers lined up on the grid for the 9th race of the season in Russia. A notable absentee was Kapicow, a race winner from earlier this season who has gone into negative and decided to throw in the towel and miss this race. Philippe Calaan was on pole for the first time this season, with Championship leader Brown lining up beside him on row 1.

The first lap was very exciting with the top 4 trading places pretty much all the time, and Calaan found himself under pressure numerous times. The main mover though was Cambal. Starting in 23rd, he was soon up to 5th after just 9 laps. However, he was in the pits pretty soon with a technical problem and dropped outside the top 30, and after that he struggled to make an impact and finished a lowly 35th in a smoking car. I'm sure it was fun while it lasted though :)

Kell, in 3rd, soon found himself under pressure and on lap 6 he was passed on the outside of turn 5 by Alger. After that overtakings were few and far between and after 10 laps Calaan had managed to open up an 8-second gap down to Brown. Alger and Kell were not far off behind, followed by Sergeev, Obeid, Seolin, Shiv, Poufinas and Barnes.

Calaan came in early, on lap 15, and it was then apparent that he was on a 3-stop strategy. His gap was not that big though and he would have to rely on his overtaking abilities to make up for coming out in 14th. Crucially for him he managed to come out of the huge car train led by Tepes in 16th, coming out in the middle of that group would surely have been a disaster.

Now the two championship-chasing Englishmen were at the front, Brown leading Alger by a narrow 1,4 second margin, followed closely by Kell only 2,4 seconds behind. On lap 18 Alger made his move and passed Brown, and on the same lap most of the top runners came in, including Brown in 2nd, Sergeev in 3rd, Obeid in 4th and Shiv in 5th, Poufinas in 7th, Barnes in 9th. Brown's stop was a 20,6 but Kell had a good 18,2 stop. Alger came in on the following lap, but the question was whether he would be able to keep his hard-fought lead?

There was now suddenly a fight for the lead between Boryczka, leading with wobbly tires and the very fast Calaan who were chasing. Calaan had no problem moving past and back into the lead on the start/finish-straight. Meanwhile, in the pits, Alger came out again after a 19,7 stop. and managed to come out right ahead of Brown, so staying out hat extra lap helped him a little bit.
Calaan was back in the lead after 20 laps, but only 13,5 seconds ahead of Alger, Brown and Kell, and it was not enough for him to get away with making an extra stop. Jakobsson had made silent progress from 28th to 5th but he was on a 1-stop strategy and had yet to come in.

Calaan came in for his second stop on lap 29 with an 18,8-second cushion down to Alger. This was not enough to keep them behind of course and he rejoined in 6th with one stop left just like almost everyone else.

The next couple of laps were fairly dull until Peter Alan sufffered a mishap on lap 33. He was having a good race running in 8th when his car suddenly started to smoke and he had to come in to fix it. I thought at the time that maybe he was due for his stop anyway and that he might just not have his strategy ruined, but unfortunately this was not to be. On the last lap, he pitted and he must have been fuming at how the random totally ruined his race as the pitted from 7th on lap 52 and finally finished 15th.

On lap 36 Kell was the first of the 2-stoppers to come in, and he was soon followed by the large majority of the field. Alger pushed hard before stopping and managed to extend his lead down to Brown in 2nd to 7,5 seconds, so he was under no immediate threat when he eventually came in, and he came out in 2nd, now a full 10 seconds ahead of Brown, with Kell in 4th and Boryczka, yet to stop, in 5th. Calaan was comfortably in the lead, but his 21,2 second lead was not nearly enough for him to pit and come out in the lead. He managed to extend it just a little bit to 24 seconds but when he came in with 10 laps left to go he rejoined in 4th place just ahead of Sergeev.

Apart from Alan's late misfortune there was no passing in the top 10 from this point on, and in the end Alger finished comfortably ahead of Brown to claim his 3rd win of the season, and Brown finished 2nd for his 6th podium in 9 races. Kell had a fairly uneventful race and finished in 3rd, making his return to the podium after his 6th place in Baku.

Calaan finished 4th, down two places from his 2nd place finish in Baku, but his form has been rising lately and this was his 8th top 10 finish out of 9 possible, a remarkably consistent season for him so far and his only blip was his unfortunate random at Ahvenisto. Sergeev finished 5th for his 4th consecutive point scoring finish, and Obeid had a new season best finish in 6th place, moving him up the standings. Shiv has scored points in all races except one and he did so yet again by finishing 7th and the final point went to Poufinas, who was so close last race, finishing 9th, but this time he got the job done and scored his first point of the season.

Barnes almost added another point to his tally but had to settle for 9th, and Traby scored his second 10th place of the season, to equal his season best. Jakobsson was the first 1-stopper in the standings as he yet again finished around the top 10-mark and Boryczka, usually fast in qualifying finished 12th. Fernandez is yet to score after the 6th place finish in the season opener and finished 13th in this race, and Papanikolaou improved on three previous finishes outside the top 20 by finishing 14th.

Alan finished 15th in the end and the final top 16 place went to Paruch, who came back down to earth after two consecutive 7th place finishes.

Championship standings: Brown 58, Alger 51, Kell 47, Sergeev 39, Shiv 29, Mendes 22, Calaan 20, Alan 15, Parker 12, Kapicow 10, Tepes 9, Jakobsson 8, Fonseca 7, Obeid 5, Paruch 4, Fernandez 3, Papanikolaou 3, Sunderland 3, Seolin 2, Poufinas 1, Barnes 1, Boryczka 1, Kowalski 1.

Impressive performance: Stuart Alger - When the track is dry he looks almost unbeatable at the moment, and even though he faces stiff opposition he has managed to string together 3 wins in the last 4 races and is catching up in the race for 1st in the standings.

Race to forget: Peter Alan - falling victim to a random, fixing it, and then finding out that your strategy almost worked out anyway just to fall at the final hurdle must have sent him into a rage if he was watching the race. Better luck next time mate.

Calaan was comfortably in the lead, but his 21,2 second lead was not nearly enough for him to pit and come out in the lead. He managed to extend it just a little bit to 24 seconds but when he came in with 10 laps left to go he rejoined in 4th place just ahead of Sergeev.

Calaan finished 4th, down two places from his 2nd place finish in Baku, but his form has been rising lately and this was his 8th top 10 finish out of 9 possible, a remarkably consistent season for him so far and his only blip was his unfortunate random at Ahvenisto.

Yeah this group is super hard compared to the others in that sense! My Raging Rabbit teammate Jocke in P18 secured his masters promotion yesterday and he has 63 :)

Are there any "guaranteed" promo spots from the top 15 points-list or will there be heartbreak for P4 in our group at the end of the season? It will be rough for whoever scores ~80 points and retains.

I don‘t know for sure but if I understand the rules correct there will be additional Promotion spots for the retiring managers from Master. Having a look at the standings there are some retirements.

But I‘m not sure about that.
So let’s see who will promote regularly.
you, Roland, seems to be save.

The only time that you see additional promotion spots in a pro group is if there is a retirement or rookie reset from a manger in elite. This is because there will be one less manager relegating from elite to master, creating the need for a manager to take that place in master which is solved through additional promotions from pro.

And yes, I still have this group forum on my watchlist and stalk it from time to time. It's the best pro group :)

Hmm, according to 8.1 of the rules (I read the German ones) there will be additional promo spots if players become removed from the game (in case they missed a certain amount of races, e.g. nine races in Pro).
For voluntary retirements/reset I did not found a specific rule.

Ralf Kutowsky is on Bridgerocks, so one assumes he intends this to be his season.

But yes, next season I can see you'll be strong.
