Agreed they work left to right, but you've got to keep in mind the BODMAS rule. And according to it, it's like this:

Are you taught by an orangutan? If you did not read the thread through, there is a rule in Maths called BIDMAS, BODMAS etc.....
It does not work left to right, but Brackets, then Indices, then Multiplication/Division, then Addition/Subtraction.
So work that out using this rule, then come back and start talking.

BODMAS or BIDMAS seems commonly accepted here and in most parts of the world. If you follow that system the answer is clearly 15. That however can not limit all the different ways an expression can be interpreted or what a certain notation really means.
